The support for Windows XP is coming to an end and has . Time to consider an alternative to move on. sounds like a lot of time, but, like an object in a mirror, it is closer than you think.

« Domino Application - ZEN style - Part 2 | Main| See you on the other side »

Nathan nails it.

Nathan is right: "I've said many times that I think the great bane of Notes is that it has a history of making it TOO EASY for people to build bad applications.  Real solutions to business problems at a departmental level don't often scale well without refactoring, and I could count on one hand the number of times I've seen an organization refactor a Notes app in Notes, rather than on another platform."

Comments

Gravatar Image1 - True. All true. I had a high executive at the Federal Aviation Administration (a big Federal Domino/Notes installation) ask me in an aside, "why are all the Notes applications so ugly?"

Gravatar Image2 - I would add that Notes not only allows to get started very quickly it also is used to solve problems it is not suited to, because it is misunderstood or because the developers do not know anything else.

Even when you have gotten off to a quick start and are solving a suitable problem at some point you may start running into limitations of the framework. Actually as soon as you try to build anything other than the stock standard log or tracking type application the framework like a rug gets pulled out from under your feet. So then you resort to changing the client by creating dlls or writing a custom UI outside of Notes and using Notes to store data only.
